The first time you visit the Hoysala temples in Belur or Halebedu, you are so struck by the intricate stonework that you can be forgiven for not noticing the way each carving plays into the grand scheme of things. It took me four visits and a wide-angle lens to realize the beauty and symmetry of their overall design. For the first time I saw the big picture - the sum-total of parts.
